System Example

The most simple solar electric system consists of a small solar panel a battery and wiring. To prevent the battery from getting damaged due to over discharging or overcharging a charge regulator is added. Such a system can power 12V (DC) lights and a radio and typically costs less than P1000, depending on the size of the solar panel and battery.
For a solar system to operate a 230V(AC) television, an inverter is added. Also more energy is required to power the TV. Such a system has two or more solar panels and two or more batteries and will cost more than P3500 (see photo below).
For a house that already is wired, the existing AC wiring and distribution board (DB) are used. The solar system is wired into the DB. When BPC power comes, the system is transferred from solar to BPC power without additional expenditures for wiring.
